They say that toddlers, at this stage in their lives, tend to be self-centered and they only understand their needs and wants so you cannot expect them to share. So how do you teach them on how to share with their siblings and playmates?
1. I’m amazed at how my eldest learn how to deal with her younger sister whenever her younger sister tries to stash her toys away from her. She manages this by giving her sister another toy. Maybe she learns this from us. Because whenever she tries to get her sister’s toy, we always tell her if you don’t want to give your toy to your sister give her something to play with.
2. At this time its OK NOT to share. Why? Because each of them should have an opportunity to play by themselves and not to be stressed by other siblings “messing” up their play. That’s why whenever we buy them some new toys, the eldest gets to play with it on top of a table or in any place where the younger one won’t be able to reach her so there will be no conflict.
3. Look for ways wherein both of them can actively participate and have fun. Like for example I bought each of them xylophones where they could play and have some good time together.
4. I remember Barney has some songs for sharing and Yo gabba gabba wherein they show on tv that it’s ok to share your toys. These shows are always a hit to my daughters. If they could mimic the dance moves and sing songs maybe they could adapt the value of sharing as well.
5. Last but not the least, is try to get to spend time with them separately in order to show them that you both love them equally and they both deserve your whole attention.
